Megaupload's Viral Music Video Is Back on YouTube as Dispute Raises New Issues

Prashant Gupta / FX FX and Sons of Anarchy creator Kurt Sutter have prevailed in a lawsuit filed by an ex-Hell's Angel biker who claimed the idea for the hit drama series was stolen.our editor recommends'Glee,' 'Sons of Anarchy' Added to Amazon Prime Instant Video Streaming Service'Sons of Anarchy' Creator Kurt Sutter on Season 4's Bold Finale and Season 5 PlansFurious 'Sons of Anarchy' Creator Tells DirecTV Viewers 'You're Getting F---ed Over'; Reveals Banned Script Chuck Zito sued FX for $5 million in June 2010 claiming he had developed a show called Nomads (later The Wild Angels) and had agents at ICM set up a pitch meeting in 2004 with FX chief John Landgraf, during which Zito says he discussed ideas for a show about a motorcycle club. FX passed on the project but later developed Sutter's Sons, which ICM packaged and which recently concluded its 4th season as a big hit for the network. "FX was obligated to pay Zito the reasonable value of his ideas, hire him to work on the series and afford him screen credit as creator," the lawsuit alleged. "Defendants breached an implied-in-fact contract with defendant." VIDEO: 'Sons of Anarchy': Ron Perlman Says Season 4 Was a Challenge At the time, Sutter took to his twitter account to blast the lawsuit, saying: "HAVING THE F***ING IDEA IS NOT THE SHOW. THERE HAVE BEEN DOZENS OF OUTLAW MOTORCYCLE TV DRAMAS PITCHED IN THE LAST TEN YEARS. NONE OF THEM HAS MADE IT TO SERIES, EXCEPT SOA. BECAUSE THEY SUCKED." STORY: 'Sons of Anarchy' Creator Kurt Sutter on Season 4's Bold Finale and Season 5 Plans Today a Los Angeles Superior Court judge agreed, ruling on summary judgment that Sons was independently created and Zito doesn't have a case. The judge relied on declarations submitted by Sutter, Landgraf and talent agent Matt Solo (now with WME), among others, showing Sutter's development process and the fact that Sons was pitched to several networks, including HBO and AMC, before arriving at FX, which bought the project in a bidding war. The judge saw no reason for the case to continue past the summary judgment phase. We've reached out to Zito's attorneys for comment. Martin Scorsese on 'Hugo'

Martin Scorsese on 'Hugo'Although Martin Scorsese is renowned for pushing due dates when editing his films, the agenda for his first three dimensional feature, "Hugo," appeared exceedingly extended even through the veteran helmer's standards. When he spoken with Variety at the begining of November, he was still being trying out a couple of moments in "Hugo," and that he marveled at the length of time complicated moments needed to render."I did not understand what that meant until a couple of several weeks ago," he states. "In some instances shots may take, with respect to the complexity, 85 to 89 days to render. We began editing this picture in the center of The month of january. I've not seen anything I've not seen anybody. I do not know where I'm.InchIn dealing with his first family film, Scorsese did not always plan to turn John Selznick's highlighted novel "The Adventures of Hugo Cabret" right into a three dimensional film. It had not been until his 12-year-old daughter and her buddies started presuming the film could be in three dimensional he began testing techniques with cinemato-grapher Robert Richardson."I simply occur to like three dimensional a good deal,Inch Scorsese states. "I recall among the great encounters I'd growing up seeing movies was the very first wave of three dimensional: Warner Bros.' 'House of Wax.' Transpire here ended up being to use depth as narrative since most people thorough."The film ultimately works out to become a love letter towards the miracle of movies, a notion that Scorsese states is secondary to his initial aim of analyzing the energy of storytelling."Whether it was (about) a designer or perhaps a author, I'm not sure basically might have had exactly the same instinct to create the image,Inch the director states. "However it wasn't due to that. Paramount's Young Adult stars Charlize Theron as a not-so-grown-up grown up, Mavis, who writes YA novels. Soon after her divorce, she returns to her hometown on a desperate mission to rekindle a romance with her high school boyfriend Buddy Slade (Patrick Wilson), who is now a married man.our editor recommendsYoung Adult: Film ReviewNew Movie Reviews: 'New Year's Eve,' 'Young Adult,' Madonna's 'W.E.' Hitting Theaters Charlize Theron on Playing a 'Bitch' in 'Young Adult' (Video)THR's Awards Season Roundtable Series 2011: The Actresses Mavis also runs into Matt Freehauf (Patton Oswalt), a former high school classmate who was bullied back in the days of high school. PHOTOS: 'Young Adult' Premiere Red Carpet Arrivals The Paramount film reunites Jason Reitman and writer Diablo Cody, who were behind the smart comedy Juno. While the main character in that film was wise beyond her teen years, their current protagonist is in desperate need of gaining a few mental years to match her age. Critics received the film mostly positively, especially praising the work of Theron as Mavis and Oswalt as Matt. Many wrote that while the film is hard to watch with its blunt and often harsh humor, it's well worth seeing. "On a scene-by-scene basis, Young Adult entirely engages with its smart exchanges between characters who are well equipped with rough edges and raw nerves," wrote The Hollywood Reporter's Todd McCarthy. FILM REVIEW: Young Adult McCarthy went on to praise the performances of Theron and Oswalt, but added that the plot has a very short arc. "The result is an impression of vibrant character sketches rather than of full-bodied drama with depth and complexity, of two characters, specifically, who could easily warrant far more extensive treatment, so acutely and specifically drawn are they," wrote McCarthy. "Shorter than a bad blind date and as sour as a vinegar Popsicle, Young Adult shrouds its brilliant, brave and breathtakingly cynical heart in the superficial blandness of commercial comedy," wrote The NY Times' A.O. Scott. "Theron and Oswalt turn out to be a terrific odd couple," wrote Betsy Sharkey of the Los Angeles Times. "Not easy because Cody's screenplay calls for, and Reitman demands, that they both reveal a great deal, and a great deal of what they reveal is exceedingly ugly." "There is a brashness of style that both Cody and Reitman embody - almost demanding that we not only laugh at, but like the unlikable side of the human condition. That sort of bravado is fine if you've got the goods to back it up. In the cutting edginess of Theron and Oswalt, they definitely do," added Sharkey. VIDEO: THR's Awards Season Roundtable Series 2011 With The Actresses "Reitman and Cody have made a big studio prestige picture that provides a realistic look at the darkest impulses of an unlikable character," wrote The Atlantic's Robert Levin. "It trades in discomfort and unease, not catharsis. That's an achievement worthy of admiration, if you can endure it," wrote Levin. "By turns amusing and annoying, Young Adult could be the flip side, plus the sequel, of Juno, another film written by Diablo Cody and directed by Jason Reitman," wrote Richard Corliss of Time. "In a thorny role, Theron is splendid; she instinctively reveals everything Mavis doesn't know about herself and offers an intimate peek into a wayward soul," added Corliss. The Smile from the Leader ((Il sorriso del capo))

A Cinecitta Luce discharge of a Cinecitta Luce production, together with Karta Film. (Worldwide sales: Cinecitta Luce, Rome.) Created by Marco Bechis. Directed by Marco Bechis. Compiled by Bechis, Gigi Riva. With: Riccardo Bechis.Using remarkable clips from Rome's peerless Istituto Luce archive, Marco Bechis constructs a portrait of Italia throughout the Fascist era in "The Smile from the Leader." Basically the final minute includes black-and-whitened footage commissioned by Mussolini to glorify his regime, and Bechis, born of the Italian father in Chile, discloses his personal link with the voice-over limited to the finish. The thought of using Mussolini's propaganda to define the time is strong, but Bechis casts his internet too wide. Intentional parallels with Berlusconi are satisfyingly apposite and can please left-leaning local people totally on TV as well as in ancillary. Coming back to his docu roots, the helmer begins with images from the Duce acclaimed by his adoring subjects after which increases the scope with footage covering numerous components from the time: education, exercise, industry, Ethiopia, journalism. Mussolini wasn't the very first leader to make use of cinema in by doing this (Peter Schamoni's superb "His Majesty Needs Sun" shows how Wilhelm II began the popularity), but he certainly put his stamp on every component of society. Adoring crowds of ladies screaming for his or her leader, and Mussolini's careful charge of the media, offer unvoiced but deliberate evaluations between your Fascist leader and Italy's recent premier. One Mussolini speech, from Turin in 1932, is really a recurring element, showing a less bombastic but nevertheless potent dictator whose populism touched a nerve within the Italian psyche that lots of argue remains even today. Though the threat of Jack Oakie's genius in "The Truly Amazing Dictator" isn't not even close to any Mussolini speech, Bechis guarantees the strongman image is not a resource of dismissive ridicule. Had the helmer focused on this element as opposed to the panoply of Fascist-era society he presents, his message could have been more effective. Voice-over is supplied by Bechis' father, Riccardo, who unflinchingly talks to be swept up within the Duce's vision: "At 18, I had been still a fool.Inch His reasoned reminiscences from the loyal hysteria and exactly how everyone was enraptured by Mussolini's showmanship (he isn't the very first person for connecting fascism with immaturity) make sure the footage is not seen with the distant lens of history. It isn't irrelevant the director themself fled Chile's dictatorship, making them doubly acquainted with the truth, as opposed to the specter, of fascism. From time to time, match edits are extremely facile, as when Mussolini addressing Fiat employees is cut with thunderous factory compressors. Music is culled from contemporary tracks though not in the films the idea is intriguing and enables Bechis with additional control, but he begins off too early with grandiloquent orchestrations, and there is nowhere else to visit after that.Digital camera (B&W/color, DigiBeta), Alvise Tedesco editors, Iacopo Patierno, Bechis seem, Patierno, Roberto Cappannelli. Cheers & Jeers: 10 Things I Hate About My Teenage Daughter

I Hate My Teenage Daughter Jeers to I Hate My Teenage Daughter for being so detestable. How do I hate the new Fox sitcom? Let me count the ways...Want more Cheers & Jeers? Subscribe to TV Guide Magazine. It wastes Emmy-winner Jaime Pressly (My Name Is Earl) in a dumb-bland role as a single mom who was raised by religious zealots. It wastes Tony-winner Katie Finneran (Promises, Promises) in a degrading role as a single mom who eats pie with her bare hands. It wastes The Wire's electrifying Chad Coleman as Finneran's African-American ex-hubby - and I describe him that way only because he's otherwise nondescript. It wastes Bridesmaids' uproarious Wendi McLendon-Covey as Finneran's high-school mean-girl-turned-principal. On the plus side, it keeps her away from playing David Spade's wife on Rules of Engagement. The titular girls (Kristi Lauren and Aisha Dee) are so abhorrent, it's not even funny; in the pilot, they lock a paraplegic classmate in the bathroom for two hours - which is how long the episode felt. Pressly's character apparently has a crush on her ex-brother-in-law, an uptight lawyer played by Desperate Housewives' Kevin Rahm. Ewww! Even the laugh track doesn't seem to find the show's stale gags amusing. Fox cancelled good shows like Human Target and The Chicago Code to make room for this turkey on their fall schedule. CBS cancelled The New Adventures of Old Christine, freeing up producers Sherry Bilsing and Ellen Kreamer to cocreate this vastly inferior single-mom sitcom. The hardest part of making up this list was limiting it to 10 items. What do you think of I Hate My Teenage Daughter?Subscribe to TV Guide Magazine now!

Bad Movies We Love: Muppets From Space

Call me a glum frog with a hand flapping up my ass, but I didn’t love The Muppets. Jim Henson’s franchise is about goofy, heartfelt antics, and his whimsy warps into a barrage of Glee tunes, self-conscious dorkiness and perky, perky people under the pen of Jason Segel. It’s a no for me. Luckily, the ’90s already gave us a solid, if stupendously, un-self-consciously dorky Muppets update in the form of Muppets From Space. It’s not exactly a part of the classic Kermit cannon, but that’s because it’s a tangential Henson operation. Think of it as Muppets Origins: Gonzo. Now you’re in. Muppets From Space is an 85-minute detour into Gonzo’s extraterrestrial heritage, and that we should appreciate. Even if it doesn’t take an Ancestry.com printout to realize Gonzo is a hybrid of Grover’s comic exasperation and Fozzie’s showbiz jones, it’s great fun to watch the classic Muppet mine his past. Very Born This Way. As the movie starts, we glimpse his recurring dream that he can’t board Noah’s ark because he’s the only member of his species, and that’s a resonant and traumatizing vision — even if you don’t realize that Noah, in this case, is played by F. Murray Abraham. Which he is. Soon, Gonzo receives paranormal messages in breakfast cereal letters, and he and the other Muppets are led on an adventure that connects them with his intergalactic loved ones. Harmless, often hilarious, and light as air. Like many Bad Movies We Love, it’s slow in spots and dotted with unremarkable characters, but that doesn’t mean it skimps on fun. Here are the best five moments in Muppets From Space; I hope you’ve ironed your polyester leisure suit in advance. Or your felt leisure suit. Either/or. 5. Kathy Griffin’s finest role: a befuddled security guard who’s horny for Muppets Forget Suddenly Susan, because Kathy Griffin’s best acting moment is in Muppets From Space. The honorable D-Lister spots Fozzie, who accidentally washed off his invisibility cloak with soap, and tries to cuff him before he can escape. Later she makes out with Animal (who then rejects her) and claims “You’re all the same — animals.” Though Jeffrey Tambor, Hulk Hogan, and Ray Liotta round out the supporting cast, Griffin is the feistiest trooper in the posse. 4. Guess what’s funny? Watching Miss Piggy get punched in the face. Pardon the shoddy quality of the following clip, but you simply must see it before you move on with your day. In Muppets From Space, Miss Piggy is a roving reporter dressed exactly like Jane Fonda in The China Syndrome, and she’s willing to use karate and one-liners to secure a scoop. Problem is, she meets her match in the kickass Josh Charles (of The Good Wife and the immortal Sports Night), and what ensues is a slapstick beatdown funnier than any single moment in The Muppets. I’ve watched this four times so far. Here comes five and six. 3. Spoiler: Gonzo’s home planet is a nonstop discotheque. Early in the movie, we’re treated to a loooong morning sequence set to The Commodores’ “Brick House,” and it turns out to be just the beginning of Muppets From Space’s unashamed funk/disco fixation. When Gonzo meets his family after a climactic ship landing, he and his new-found folks rip into a spirited rendition of Kool and the Gang’s “Celebration.” If you thought Kermit the Frog’s “Kokomo” cover was hokey, wait until you see Gonzo’s Julie Kavner-esque mother encourage the whole planet to come on! (Sidenote: I am obsessed with the last 30 seconds of “Ladies Night” at the moment, and my judgment may be swayed by James “J.T.” Taylor’s blithe sonic force.) 2. The most underrated Muppet ever: Pepe the King Prawn While I appreciate Muppets From Space’s use of Clifford, the Muppet who acted as emcee of the failed primetime variety series Muppets Tonight, the true underdog hero of the movie is Pepe the King Prawn. A fellow Muppets Tonight evacuee, Pepe is a world-class charmer thanks to his heavy Spanish accent, bug-eyed alertness, and continuous mispronunciation of Kermit’s name. (“Kermin” is his attempt.) In this hilarious moment, Pepe and Kermit fool a patrolling doctor. Kermit’s working his ho-hum chutzpah, but Pepe takes the scene in his grasp and woos us with pure heart — or at least a cephalothorax. 1. It’s a stoner comedy. Muppets are inherently trippy, but Muppets From Space keys up the stoner quotient to a new high. In no particular order: Gonzo receives an important message from a talking sandwich, drifts through the sky like Jim Breuer in Half Baked, chats with “cosmic fish” in the stratosphere, and watches his cereal form warnings in claymation choreography stolen from the video for “Sledgehammer.” If I have to invoke the name of Peter Gabriel’s stop-motion circus, you can assume I’m talking about a marijuana-friendly work. Ingenues have tradition of landing lead actress nom

Elizabeth Olsen in 'Martha Marcy May Marlene'Felicity Jones in 'Like Crazy'Adepero Oduye in 'Pariah'It's no great shock that youth is prized in Hollywood, but for the last few years, youth and talent have made for an especially esteemed combination during awards season. For three years running, fresh-faced femmes have come out of nowhere to capture moviegoers' attention, earn critics' laurels and move their peers to nominate them for lead actress honors.First there was Ellen Page in "Juno" (2007) then Carey Mulligan in "An Education" (2009) and, last year, Jennifer Lawrence in "Winter's Bone."It could happen again, and if not with the Oscars, then possibly an acknowledgement by the Indie Spirits, Screen Actors Guild or Golden Globes. There has been much praise for Elizabeth Olsen's magnetic turn as a cult victim in "Martha Marcy May Marlene," British actress Felicity Jones' perf as a lovestruck writer in "Like Crazy" and Adepero Oduye's work as an emotionally confused gay Brooklyn teenager in "Pariah.""If this is a trend, I welcome it and applaud it," says casting director Deborah Aquila, "because the level of work is so incredible."It's worth noting that the films in which these young women came to the fore are independently made, says Aquila."These are the kinds of movies we look to as casting directors, where they have the luxury of casting an unknown," she explains. "You don't need a megastar to get the financing going, so it gives you the fantastic opportunity to search and audition and then introduce a wonderful talent like Lizzie Olsen or Jennifer Lawrence.""Martha" director Sean Durkin admits it was important to him to cast an unknown when he was looking for his female lead, and what struck him about Olsen in her audition was "an ability to give so much feeling with just her eyes."When shooting started last fall, Mulligan had already received her Oscar nom and "Winter's Bone" had turned Lawrence into the sensation of 2010."You look at those roles and you say, 'It's great that the public got to see their first break,' " says Durkin, who admits to wishing for a similar reception for Olsen. "There's definitely a part of me that wanted that, and then a few weeks into the shoot I could tell there was something special."Vogue film critic John Powers suggests that in fanning the hype for these talented newcomers, Hollywood might be correcting a bit of its male-centric moviemaking ethos."Somehow the industry may be shifting back toward realizing it needs young women who aren't just on the arm of the superhero," Powers says. "It's almost impossible not to watch Carey Mulligan in 'An Education' and think that there's all sorts of stuff she can do that others can't. So probably there's that little bit of pride in the industry at finding people with some talent."Of course, there was a time decades ago when the arrival of a glittery, popular ingenue was bolstered by a studio machine ready to protect the brand by showcasing her in tailor-made parts and quality projects. One need only look at the glorious runs of Audrey Hepburn and Grace Kelly in the 1950s after their Oscar wins. There's no studio icon-developing system in place today, but a smart young actress riding a wave of acclaim can certainly create her own career path, Aquila and Powers believe."They'll do their studio films and their independents," says Aquila, who cites Mulligan's varied roster since "An Education," which includes titles big ("Wall Street: Money Never Sleeps," "The Great Gatsby"), edgy and small ("Shame," "Never Let Me Go") and even theater ("The Seagull"). "The need is to do great work all the time, and that's refreshing.""It's harder for women because there are fewer roles," says Powers, "but now actresses have a lot more freedom."AWARD SEASON TALENT PREVIEWSupporting vs. lede debate an annual discussion | Ingenues have tradition of landing lead actress nom | Studios hope early releases have kudos traction | Motion capture perfs under review Contact the Variety newsroom at news@variety.com

Gotham's first lady of funny

With Carolines on Broadway, Hirsch produced an trendy, elegant atmosphere that stands as opposed to the cramped, red-colored brick-wall venues which are p rigueur for comedy.Three decades ago a brand new cabaret act opened up on Eighth Avenue in Chelsea. NY did not really notice. Yet another cabaret, in the end. The pair beginning the club, Carl Christian and Bob Stickney, had contacted a buddy, Caroline Hirsch, to both invest and also to provide the place a ladies title. After muddling through for any year approximately, Hirsch made the decision her namesake should be a full-time comedy club. "Cabaret did not move me," she states. "It had been fun, it had not been tapping a popular culture nerve." The town were built with a couple of notable stand-up clubs -- the Improv and Catch a Rising Star included in this -- but Hirsch established a template that made Caroline's a family group title in comedy. Rather than featuring up-and-coming comics running through short sets, Hirsch produced a headliner room, with lengthy sets for talent which was penetrating on tv. "I had been flying through the chair of my pants," confesses Hirsch, who didn't have show business experience on stage or off. She originated from retail, getting labored in the mall Gimbels. "As being a buyer meant giving a person what they need,Inch she states, however the Brooklyn native also understood from her childhood spent watching "The Tonight Show Starring Johnny Carson" that functions who carried out on tv provided free publicity. "I recall Johnny Carson saying David Steinberg could be carrying out at Mr. Kelly's in Chicago," she states. "After I got Jay Leno as my first act, he was arriving to become on David Letterman and that i got him to say the club." Caroline's would soon tout a who's who of rising comics, from Pee-wee Herman to Jerry Seinfeld to Richard Lewis. Later, Hirsch gone to live in a larger home in the South Street Seaport. Which was only a initial step. Within 2 yrs, Hirsch's club were built with a weekly television series known as "Caroline's Comedy Hour" on the&E -- the writing staff featured youthful dollars like Jon Stewart and Louis C.K. The show, which won a CableAce Award, introduced a great deal larger crowds towards the club. "Nobody spoken about brands then but that demonstrate was extremely important for all of us,Inch Hirsch states. Additionally, it underscores why this specific club made it a surge competing, recessions and new trends in comedy. Hirsch has not only a watch for funny folks, she's a shrewd business sense, whether it is legitimate estate, interior planning or staff. "I am a person of instinct, that is what I've, and that i trust my stomach," she states. By 1989, Hirsch was fed up with being across the street from the Fulton Seafood Market. Ian Schraeger asked her to consider within the famous Billy Rose Gemstone Horseshoe space within the basement from the Vital Hotel, that they was making over. The area needed an excessive amount of restoration however it began her considering Occasions Square while NY was at its nadir and also the neighborhood was still being seedy, the brand new 42nd Street non-profit created in 1990 and Hirsch, having faith in her vision concerning the city, saw a place around the make. In 1992, Caroline's gone to live in Broadway and 49th Street, inside a new business building that changed a classic theater and needed an entertainment component. It had not been just location, location, location. Hirsch produced an trendy, elegant atmosphere -- in food, space and design -- that was in stark contrast towards the cramped, red-colored brick wall comedy clubs appearing everywhere. "I needed an area with lower roofs, which will work for comics, that performed well but that did not seem like a comedy club," she states. Her new 300-chair room and 100-chair bar won a exclusive award in the American Institute for Architecture for "outstanding building interior." "It's two decades old now also it still looks pretty contemporary," she states. While adhering to her headliner brand, in 1993 she also introduced a brand new Talent Evening, which assisted bust out entertainers like Jim Gaffigan and Greg Giraldo. (The second, however, signifies one rare misstep -- Hirsch embarked into new territory by becoming his manager. It did not pan out. "This is a hands-holding business," she states. "I'd rather produce.") The year after, Hirsch made among her best -- but least heralded -- choices, employing Louis Faranda. She'd known Faranda for a long time so when Catch a Rising Star closed she grabbed him up. The clients might not be aware of general manager's title but he's the guy who runs the particulars and books the talent which make this club run. "I believed of escaping . from the business but respected Caroline and what she'd accomplished for the company,Inch Faranda states. "If a person head lines here it resonates on their behalf from coast to coast.Inch Over time, Hirsch considered growing and was wooed by Vegas hotel proprietors. "I never felt comfortable," she states, understanding that even getting Faranda here, if she spread herself too thin,"things may go haywire so rapidly." Rather, she found different ways to develop -- a 20th anniversary event at Carnegie Hall gave her an opportunity to use the greatest stars from her past and inspired the NY Comedy Festival, that is now in the eighth year. "It is good for associations in the market also it puts the target the club, which produces everything," Hirsch states. HIRSCH'S CAREER TIMELINE:1981: Caroline's opens, initially like a cabaret club, at eighth Avenue and 26th Street in Chelsea.1982: Jay Leno works there, one of the primary comedy functions that Caroline Hirsch books. One of the entertainers who'd follow in early years are Jerry Seinfeld, Steven Wright, Pee Wee Herman, Richard Lewis, Jon Stewart and Denis Leary.1983:The cabaret is changed with a pure comedy club, changing the conventional "showcase" format with one which features headliners, frequently ones who've already made an appearance on televison.1987: Too popular because of its original space, Caroline's moves into bigger digs in the South Street Seaport.1989: A&E launches "Caroline's Comedy Hour," an every week program that runs until 1993.1992: Getting again outgrown its surroundings, Caroline's moves to Broadway, opening a ten,000-sq . ft ., 300-chair space at Broadway and 49th Street.1993: Caroline's, most widely known because of its headliners, institutes a brand new Talent Evening, which will help launch the careers of Jim Gaffigan and Greg Giraldo.2003: Caroline's and Caroline Hirsch celebrate 2 decades within the comedy business by finally which makes it to Carnegie Hall for any star-studded evening.2004: Caroline's launches the NY Comedy Festival.2007: Caroline's and also the NY Comedy Festival starts its Fully Stand Up For Heroes help to raise funds for that Bob Woodruff Foundation.2011: The NY Comedy Festival grows to Brooklyn, Queens and Staten Island and announces a 3-year extension of their partnership with Comedy Central.RELATED LINKS Even warhol found laugh Contact the range newsroom at news@variety.com

At almost every opportunity, he seems to have gleefully inserted his foot into his mouth. STORY: Brett Ratner Out as Oscar Show Producer First, he addressed rumors about a past relationship with Olivia Munn, defending his manhood by confirming that he did indeed "bang" her. Then, he dropped the three-letter f-bomb at a Q&A, eliciting scorn from GLAAD and eye rolls from every corner of the industry. Most recently, he stopped by Howard Stern to backtracked on Munn but confess that he once forced Lindsay Lohan to get checked for sexually transmitted diseases when she was "very young." So in the interest of absorbing the crudest, most ill-advised and all around regrettable soundbites to come out of Ratner's mouth in the last week, here are the 10 greatest. And by "greatest," we mean worst: 1. "I'm a hypochondriac. Before I go all the way, I send the girl to the doctor and check them for everything. My doctor has a test to tell if you're going to catch something in the future even." - - Brett Ratner on Lindsay Lohan (The Howard Stern Show) PHOTOS: Oscar Show Moments 2. He said, 'Brett, in 25 years, I've never seen a sperm count like this.' The average load is 40 million sperm, and only 30-40 percent are motile. He said I have 10 times, 480 million sperm, he said, 'If you breathe on a girl, she's going to get pregnant.' ... Friday B.O.: 'Tower Heist,' 'Puss in Boots' strong

U's 'Tower Heist' is on track to win the weekend with a $30 million opening. DreamWorks Animations' 'Puss in Boots' is holding strong in its second weekend, with $25 million."Tower Heist" is on track to win the weekend with a $30 million bow, while "Puss in Boots" is holding on strong for a $25 million second-week take, according to projections based on early Friday returns at the domestic box office. The prospects for "A Very Harold & Kumar 3D Christmas" were murkier -- it's taken in $500,000 in early matinees, but could pop with late-night auds, giving it a range from $14 million to $18 million, depending on whom you ask. Universal's "Tower Heist" made $1.4 million in early Friday returns, which most B.O. observers believe should give it the weekend crown. But less optimistic estimates put it in the $23 million-$25 million range, setting up a potential horse race with DreamWorks Animation's "Boots." The 3D family toon, which suffered in last weekend's opening from a freakishly early winter storm in the Northeast, opened to $34 million. But it's dropping a scant 30% week over week, putting it on track for the silver medal. Contact Andrew Stewart at andrew.stewart@variety.com

Puss In Boots Tops Box Office

First Published: October 30, 2011 2:02 PM EDT Credit: Getty Images Caption Salma Hayek and Antonio Banderas arrive at the premiere of Dreamworks Animations Puss In Boots at the Regency Westwood Theatre on October 23, 2011 in Westwood, California.LOS ANGELES, Calif. -- The Shrek spinoff Puss in Boots landed on all fours, opening with an estimated $34 million to lead the box office. The DreamWorks 3-D animated film, distributed by Paramount Pictures, proved the popular character voiced by Antonio Banderas was a big enough draw outside the Shrek franchise. The PG-rated Puss in Boots scored with family audiences on the weekend before Halloween, and also drew a large Hispanic crowd, which made up 35 percent of its audience. Though the box office for the top 12 movies was up 7.8 percent from the corresponding weekend last year, it was still affected by both the unseasonable winter storm on the East Coast and the appeal of the Game 7 broadcast of baseballs World Series on Friday night. DreamWorks estimated the storm took off several million from Puss in Boots. The new release on the weekend from 20th Century Fox, the Justin Timberlake sci-fi thriller In Time, was down as much as20 percent Saturday in markets like NY and Philadelphia. But the largest estimated opening didnt happen in North America. The Adventures of Tintin, which is being distributed overseas by Sony Pictures and Paramount Pictures, opened in 19 international markets and hauled in $55.8 million. The performance-capture 3-D animated film, directed by Steven Spielberg and adapted from the beloved Belgian comic series, was especially popular in France, where its $21.5 million was the largest opening for a non-sequel Hollywood film. The film opens in the U.S. on Dec. 21. Were still waiting for the holiday season to kick in in earnest as we get into November, said Paul Dergarabedian, box-office analyst for Hollywood.com. The holiday season is going to be very strong at the box office. Paramount also claimed the weekends second top performing movie with the low-budget horror film Paranormal Activity 3. That film took in $18.5 million in its second week of release, bringing its cumulative total to $81.3 million. Paramounts Footloose was the fourth film on the weekend, adding $5.4 million for a three-week total of $38.4 million. In Time opened with $12 million domestically but took in more ($14.5 million) overseas. The biggest disappointment was The Rum Diary, the Hunter S. Thompson adaption starring Johnny Depp. It opened weakly, earning just $5 million, a low figure for a film headlined by Depp and which cost an estimated $50 million to make. But the solid opening for Puss in Boots was much needed for DreamWorks. The company said Tuesday its net income fell by half in the third quarter as its early summer release, Kung Fu Panda 2, did not haul in as much at the box office as last years Shrek Forever After. Reviews and audience reaction have been positive for Puss in Boots. Its release date was moved up a week to essentially give the film more time to run in theaters before other large fall movies are released. It added $17 million internationally, with most of that coming from Russia. We always looked at this as a two-weekend release strategy, so we think weve got a good start on that plan, said Anne Globe, head of worldwide marketing and consumer products at DreamWorks. Being the number one movie and the likely Halloween weekend record-breaker, were well-positioned to go into week two as well as play through the holidays. Estimated ticket sales for Friday through Sunday at U.S. and Canadian theaters, according to Hollywood.com. Where available, latest international numbers are also included. Final domestic figures will be released Monday. 1. Puss in Boots, $34 million. ($17 million international.) 2. Paranormal Activity 3, $18.5 million. ($17 million international.) 3. In Time, $12 million. ($14.5 million international.) 4. Footloose, $5.4 million. ($1.4 million international.) 5. The Rum Diary, $5 million. 6. Real Steel, $4.7 million. 7. The Three Musketeers, $3.5 million. 8. The Ides of March, $2.7 million. 9. Moneyball, $2.4 million. 10. Courageous, $1.8 million. Copyright 2011 by The Associated Press. All rights reserved. Exclusive Clip From The Awakening

Warning: contains scary dollhouseEven if we didn't tell you anything about The Awakening, we're betting that you'll be able to figure quite a lot out by watching this exclusive clip from the film. There's a mysterious child running upstairs in a large and empty-looking house, a distraught-looking woman running after him with her hair all askew, and at the top of the house a truly terrifying dollhouse (Yes, seriously. Who knew dollhouses could be this unnerving?). It is, in other words, a horror!Set in 1921 in a country recovering from the trauma of World War I,the film sees Rebecca Hall play the wonderfully-named Florence Cathcart, who visits a boarding school to expose what she believes is a hoax story of a ghost child haunting the place. We're guessing, in this case, it's not quite that simple. The film also stars Dominic West and Imelda Staunton, and it's all directed by NickWest. Look out for The Awakening on November 11; appropriately enough, the anniversary of the signing of the Armistice that ended World War I.

At NYFF: Martin Scorsese Gives Hometown Crowd a Taste of 3-D Hugo

After a weekend of speculation, guesses and second-guesses about which top-secret “work in progress by a master filmmaker” would in fact screen tonight as a last-minute addition to the NY Film Festival, Martin Scorsese confirmed today’s reports by taking the stage at Avery Fisher Hall in Manhattan and introducing his family-friendly 3-D opus Hugo to a loving hometown crowd. Not everybody in attendance had monitored the buzz around tonight’s event. A few wizened viewers who probably couldn’t distinguish the output of a stereoscope from that of a stereophone looked baffled as ushers issued fistfuls of plastic-wrapped glasses with their seating directions. (“What are these? “They’re for the 3-D.” “Row 3-D?”, etc. etc.) But most of the house settled in with the type of anticipation befitting any never-before-seen Scorsese film, let alone a crowd-pleasing gambit applying the premiere moviegoing gimmick of our day to a product that even the filmmaker admitted beforehand wasn’t quite finished yet. “So this is a work in progress,” Scorsese said from the stage, his right hand raising a slip of paper containing Hugo’s inventory of unfinished elements — which he commenced to read. Like, all of it. “Which means it’s not color-corrected. We’re starting that right now. At the beginning of the film and in other places there are things called pre-visualizations, which means they’re little, crude, computer-generated people, which they promise me are going become human soon. The visual effects are temporary. The 3-D is still being worked on, and the sound mixes are temporary. The music for the most part is still temporary. That means it’s an actual score but it’s on temporary instruments. He’s recording it now in London — Howard Shore. The credits are 2-D, and there aren’t that many on there right now. And you will see a few wonderful green screens. You can put in anything you want. “So look!” he concluded. “I hope you enjoy it, and I hope that those of you who do like it come and see the final film.” And that’s basically to say that the story is here to stay, for better or worse. Which is fine by me; I quite enjoyed Hugo for the most part, if only for its singular status as the world’s first activist magic-realist holiday family blockbuster-hopeful. (I think? Was there some ice-cap preservation angle to The Polar Express? I never saw it.) Scorsese and his Aviator screenwriter John Logan have adapted Brian Selznick’s acclaimed novel-comic hybrid_The Invention of Hugo Cabret_ as a pure tribute to not only cinema, but also the endangered legacies of its earliest practitioners. As Selznick did, Scorsese lathers the pill in generous coats of aesthetic sugar and bottles it in the story of Hugo Cabret (Asa Butterfield), a young orphan whose primary, essentially accidental purpose in life has become to wind the clocks in a vast Paris train station circa 1930. Chased endlessly by a war-veteran station inspector (Sacha Baron Cohen) and eyed with suspicion by a tired old toy-booth owner (Ben Kingsley), Hugo scurries and sulks around the premises by day while attempting to fix a wind-up automaton discovered by his late watchmaker father (Jude Law). Its Mona Lisa smile teases Hugo and is even occasionally reflected in the face of Isabelle (Chlo Grace Moretz), a more privileged orphan looked after by the toy-booth owner and his wife, Isabelle’s godparents. The kids make fast-ish friends whose bond over Hugo’s confiscated automaton notebook takes deeper root in the lure of cinema and the quest for belonging. A conventional festival review from this point would just be inappropriate; there are currently green-screen backgrounds visible in numerous shots and entire sequences of train commuters that wouldn’t be too out of place in a Taiwanese news animation, and anyway, Stephanie Zacharek will do the honors when the completed Hugo reaches theaters this Thanksgiving. Let it suffice to say that Scorsese, mining the innovations of his filmmaking forebears and contemporaries alike, runs his typically adventurous camera through the 3-D ringer with aplomb. His introduction — comprising a whooshing tour of the station, a hungry pursuit by the game, gimpy Baron Cohen and his equally game Doberman, and finally a gorgeous perspective on winter lowering over Paris — is a thing of nearly wordless beauty. A sturdy first act gives way to the marshmallow center of the story, stalling out like Hugo’s stubborn automaton yet never swinging its sentimental hammer with lethal, Spielberg-grade force. Stray diversions come and go, some in the forms of plot points (wait, Hugo’s father died how?), others in the forms of such humanizing devices as Emily Mortimer, appearing as the flower girl whose heart is the inspector’s only objective sought more desperately than Hugo himself. Christopher Lee, Richard Griffiths and Frances de la Tour orbit the scene in various other permutations of gravitas. But then Scorsese gets serious. Those familiar with Selznick’s source material will understand the allure of Hugo Cabret for the filmmaker, with their mutual passions for cinema as both mass entertainment and cultural heritage. Those unfamiliar shouldn’t have the specifics spoiled for them, save to say that the final 30 minutes are a captivating tightrope walk that evince both passions in without guile or reservation. It’s so over-the-top that many exiting theatergoers broke their smiles only to either admire or rue Scorsese’s whimsical evangelism. “It was so preachy!” I told one peer, only to realize before adding, “But I kind of liked being preached to!” At least I preferred it compared to the well-made, well-acted but relatively bloodless conviction of the film’s first half. In any case, I’m nothing if not eager to follow directions, especially those from the evening’s master filmmaker. Surprises are fun, but the jury is out. Second viewing, here I come. I spent my first 50 years trying to become well known as a writer, and the next 30 trying to avoid being famous, he said. I walk down the street now or go to a football game and people shout, Hey, Andy! And I hate that. So if you see him in a restaurant, Rooney said as he signed off, please, just let me eat my dinner. The Playboy Club: TV Review

The Playboy Club is among two new dramas (ABC's Pan Am being another) that tries to make money from the retro feel of Mad Males but has neither the ambition, writing nor acting to produce this kind of comparison anything beyond a chuckle-heavy notion.our editor recommends'The Playboy Club' Showrunner: 'There's a perception of the Show That's False'NBC's 'The Playboy Club' Argues It's All About Women's EmpowermentNBC's Year Tv Shows: 'Playboy Club,' 'Prime Suspect' and MoreRelated Subjects•Fall Television Preview It begins with Hugh Hefner narrating just what the scene in Chicago involved in individuals days: "An area where anything could affect anybody -- or any Bunny." Ugh. PHOTOS: Fall TV's 12 Most Anticipated Shows It's difficult to imagine there's still an allure for the ླྀs Playboy Club swingin' lifestyle, however when there's, Playboy Club hasn't illuminated it. Sure, it absolutely was a great party and you also will make seem advice ("I make greater than my father,Inch states one Bunny), in attempting to exhibit it wasn't all glamour inside (an acceptable assumption then one the authors needs to be given credit for watching), the show undercuts exactly what it seems being trying difficult to sell: the club would be a place for female empowerment. "It absolutely was the very first ླྀs, as well as the Bunnies were a couple of from the only women who may be anything they seriously considered,In . intones Hef. Err. PHOTOS: Fall TV Preview 2011: The Returning Shows But let's not digress. The particular worries of Playboy Club lie within its status just like a Mad Males also-went. Casting Eddie Cibrian since the lead only muddies water because any time you appear at him and every time he utters a line, it's another-rate Don Draper the truth is and pay attention to. He's Nick Dalton, Chicago's top attorney. A Mob boss who was simply groping after which it apparently trying to eliminate the new Bunny, Maureen (Amber Heard), is accidentally destroyed inside the Playboy Club, and Nick, which has old Mob ties, helps her eliminate the body. This intrigue enables the authors to accomplish greater than focus on women fitted in Bunny costumes. Nevertheless the souped-up premise doesn't save the writing. A bartenders that the gym has is annoyed that his Bunny girlfriend -- which has no fascination with marriage to him because she's getting a lot of fun -- can get hit on constantly by lecherous males. He gripes for the gm, Billy (David Krumholtz, trying his hands at drama instead of comedy). Billy states he'd the identical challenge with his Bunny girlfriend: "Yeah, that's why I married her -- got her pregnant and ugly." See -- empowerment. Then there's this: "A lady can't be described as a Bunny forever," states Hef's first Bunny hire, Carol Lynne (Laura Benanti, the most effective factor choosing for that show). So she becomes -- no kidding -- the "Bunny Mother," accountable for whipping the ladies fit and, um, strengthening them in some manner. The whole factor quickly becomes hokey together with a grind. Blame goes consistently for the writing, in a single Bunny repeating how awesome Nick is -Up towards the rumor he features a large penis -- to another Bunny scolding an allegedly prudish married Bunny by saying she waves her wedding ring around "as being a guy could easily get electrocuted if he a great deal as glances around your cat cat." Oooh, edgy, NBC. Amber Heard Eddie Cibrian The Playboy Club
